Good Practice

Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)

Working with parents and Governors

Schools have held a parent's evening to include parents in reviewing their SRE policy and schemes of work. Some schools have used a SRE discussion paper to initiate this process.

The Healthy School Scheme Team, School Nurse or SRE Teacher Adviser will be able to support schools in organising parent's consultation meetings and Governors' meetings.

In one school this has been followed by parent's coffee mornings to discuss how to talk to their children about sex and relationships.

Staff Training

The Salford and Trafford Healthy School Scheme with the local LEA deliver training on SRE policy development and SRE schemes of work.

Special Educational Needs

The Salford and Trafford Health Promotion Service coordinate a Sex Education Support Network for Special Schools. Teachers, School Nurses and other health professionals meet three times a year to share good practice.

Peer Educators

The Salford College Peer Education Programme and A PAUSE (Added Power and Understanding in Sex Education) train peer educators to deliver SRE within PSHE lessons in secondary schools.
