Physical Activity
"Fitbods! putting the play back into the playground"
Fitbods aims to increase physical activity levels amongst school children
by providing a wide range of supervised activities and games during
lunchtimes. The project is designed to encourage all children, whatever
their ability, to enjoy physical activity whilst gaining obvious health
benefits.
An incentive scheme has been incorporated into the project, which rewards
children for attending Fitbods sessions. A reward is given for every
five sessions attended and after fifty sessions, children are entitled
to a taster session at the National Cycling Centre.
Fitbods workshops are held for teachers, lunchtime assistants, learning
mentors, classroom assistants and peer educators. These have been a
great success, with all participating schools implementing Fitbods into
their schools successfully and in many different ways. For example,
peer educators from a secondary school, travel to their feeder primary
school to supervise games and activities and "A" Level students
are working with their year 7 pupils on the Fitbods project. In Primary
Schools, we have year 6 pupils working with younger pupils.
Fitbods has expanded into 46 schools. The games have also been specially
adapted for use in special schools. The Trafford Centre is sponsoring
the project and through this sponsorship, Fitbods will be available
to many more schools.
