These criteria are for schools who registered before 31/12/01. For
schools who register after January 2002, there will be new criteria
which will follow shortly.

A. HEALTH EDUCATION CO-ORDINATOR (S) AND POLICIES
This school has:
1. Named individual(s) with responsibility for health related issues.
2. Clear policies on health-related issues - for example, sex and relationship
education, drug education, which are developed in line with legal requirements
and non-statutory guidance.
3. A process whereby policy development and implementation involves
the whole school community.
4. Policies in which the roles and responsibilities of the whole school
community are clearly defined.
5. A process whereby policies are reviewed regularly and updated when
necessary.
6. A system of drawing the attention of outside visitors to relevant
policies, which might affect their work.
7. A planned programme of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE),
which is developmental throughout the school.
8. Liaises appropriately with the School Nurse/Health Advisor and other
relevant professionals to complement the PSHE programme.

B. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
This school has: -
1. A policy on physical education in the curriculum.
2. Leisure as well as educative activities organised for the children
(e.g. skipping at breaks).
3. Clubs for sports, games and/or leisure pursuits.
4. Links with local sports and/or activity clubs.
5. Links with Sports Development Officers.
6. A process whereby it encourages the involvement and understanding
of parents/carers.

C. SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
This school has: -
1. A welcoming entrance with adequate signs.
2. Sufficient litter bins, which are well placed and emptied regularly.
3. Adequate hygiene facilities including clean toilets (with lockable
doors),
stocked with soap and towels and sanitary disposal.
4. Separate hygiene facilities, which meet the needs of staff.
5. Quiet places for children to sit.
6. A system for reducing waste and recycling appropriate materials.
7. Given attention to safe parking areas for staff, parents and visitors.

D. STRESS MANAGEMENT/RELAXATION/SUPPORT FOR STAFF AND PUPILS
This school: -
1. Provides opportunities for staff and pupils to relax.
2. Has options for pupils and staff to spend their break times.
3. Has a programme of residential/outside visits for pupils.
4. Has a policy of confidentiality in which confidences can be shared.
5. Provides opportunities for pupils to discuss their concerns.

H. SAFETY
This school: -

2. Encourages and enables staff to take part in training programmes
on child protection.

5. Promotes safety and safety equipment during physical education, play
and leisure activities.
6. Encourages the involvement of parents in safety education programmes.

I. DRUG EDUCATION (including smoking and alcohol)
This school: -
1. Actively promotes a no-smoking environment.
2. Offers support to parents, staff and pupils who wish to give up smoking.
3. Has a named member of staff and a governor who are responsible for
drug
education provision.
4. Has a planned drug education programme involving development of skills,
starting from early years, which identifies learning outcomes appropriate
to
pupils' age, ability and level of maturity and which is based on pupils'
needs
assessment.
5. Has a policy, owned and implemented by the whole school, including
parents/carers, for managing drug related incidents, which includes
identifying sources of support for pupils and alternatives to exclusion.
6. Has staff who understand the role that schools can play in the national
drug strategy and are confident to discuss drugs issues and services
with pupils.
7. Works with the police, youth service and local drug services in line
with the Drug Action Team strategy to develop its understanding of local
issues and to inform its policy.

J. SEX & RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION GUIDANCE
This school: -
1. Has an up to date S.R.E. policy which is made available to all individuals
involved in the development and delivery of S.R.E.
2. Has planned whole school programme, which has clear objectives for
each year group and key stage.
3. Ensures that staff delivering S.R.E. have a sound basic knowledge
of relevant issues and feel confident in delivering the programme.
4. Aims to promote sexual health in its delivery of the S.R.E. programme.
5. Adheres to its policy on confidentiality in developing and delivering
the S.R.E. programme.
